About the Santa Barbara Historical Museum
Located between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean lies the coastal city of Santa Barbara, California, full of a rich and vibrant history. Once home to the native Chumash people, the city was later occupied by the Spanish in the 18th century and became a part of Mexico in 1822. With the California Gold Rush, it transformed into a bustling boomtown and later evolved into a Victorian Era health resort. The city played a significant role in the silent film industry and was also an oil boom town. During World War II, it served as a supporting military base before ultimately emerging as the “American Riviera” resort destination that it is today - a true gem along the breathtaking California coast.
History of The Santa Barbara Historical Museum
In 1932, a group of individuals banded together to ensure that Santa Barbara's rich history was not lost to time. They called themselves the Santa Barbara Historical Society and set out to collect and preserve materials that showcased the city's storied past. As the society grew and gained more followers, their efforts began to attract attention. Fast forward to 1964, and their hard work paid off with the completion of a permanent building for the Santa Barbara Historical Museum.
Today, the museum stands as a local landmark, showcasing rotating exhibits of artifacts and art and hosting community events. For those looking for a unique wedding venue, the Museum Courtyard, Covarrubias Adobe & Penthouse, and Adobe Courtyard provide ample space to experience the history and beauty of Santa Barbara in a truly special way.
