Capturing Wedding Rings in a Modern Way
Throughout history, various cultures have incorporated rituals and symbols into their marriage ceremonies. Many of these customs have influenced modern-day wedding traditions in the western world. For instance, the ancient Greeks and Romans practiced specific marriage rituals that still influence wedding ceremonies today. However, it’s the ancient Egyptians that hold a special place in the history of wedding rings. They began the symbolic tradition of exchanging rings as a representation of eternal love and commitment. Today, the exchange of rings remains a significant aspect of weddings. It symbolizes the love and commitment between two people and serves as a unique expression of their personalities.
The History Behind the Symbolism
In the rich tapestry of human history, the circle has long been a symbol of eternity, representing the unbroken cycle of life and love. This enduring idea is beautifully exemplified in the tradition of exchanging wedding rings, which can be traced back over 6,000 years to the ancient Egyptians. On preserved papyrus scrolls, we find depictions of woven circles of reeds being exchanged between spouses as a symbol of their eternal love. It was the Egyptians who also believed that the fourth finger held a special significance as a vein, known as the "vena amoris", was thought to run directly from that finger to the heart, making it the perfect place for the wedding ring (later determined factually inaccurate, but still a lovely thought).
Over time, the exchange of rings evolved and became more elaborate, with precious metals and intricate designs adding to the beauty and symbolism of this tradition, which has been passed down through the ages to become an integral part of weddings around the world.
Modern-Day Tradition
In modern times, exchanging wedding rings is not just a declaration of love and devotion, but a way for couples to showcase their unique style and personality. From understated and classic gold bands to intricate, custom-made designs, the possibilities are endless. Engraving special messages, layering rings, and incorporating personal touches are all ways to make this age-old tradition truly your own.
Capturing the beauty and emotion of the ring exchange is an essential part of documenting the wedding day. As photographers, we take great care in creating images that showcase the rings and the meaningful exchange between the couple. Here are some examples of the shots we capture to preserve this cherished tradition:
Stylized Detail Image
Capturing the beauty and significance of the wedding ring is one of our favorite images to create. We love to take stylized detail shots of the rings while the couple is getting ready. To ensure we get the perfect shot, we ask that the rings are set aside and ready for us upon our arrival. We also enjoy incorporating meaningful props such as a sentimental ring box, delicate florals, or any items that complement the overall theme of the wedding. These photos are a beautiful way to document the start of a lifetime of love and commitment.
Ceremony Ring Exchange
With great care and attention to detail, we document the ring exchange. We work in perfect tandem to capture this moment from two angles. While one lens frames the complete ceremony, the other focuses up-close to beautifully capture the sliding of the ring onto the finger and the intimate expressions on the couple's faces. We also enjoy capturing the joyous reactions of your loved ones, especially the parents, as they witness the beautiful commitment you both share.
Candid Images that Highlight the Rings
Capturing candid images that highlight the rings is important to us. We'll be there to photograph all the moments such as the ring bearer proudly carrying them down the aisle, the blessing of the rings during the ceremony and the happy couple showing off their rings to family and friends. Every moment counts and we want to make sure we document them all for you to cherish forever.
A personalized wedding ring exchange is a beautiful way to symbolize the love and commitment shared between two people. It's a moment that will be remembered and cherished for a lifetime, not just by the couple, but by all those who witness it. By incorporating personal touches and meaningful elements, the exchange of rings becomes more than just a tradition, it becomes a reflection of the unique and beautiful love story of the couple.
